Standing Water

How to Kill Mosquito Larvae in Standing Water With Household Products hunker.com
“.. If you have a backyard pond, keep the water well-aerated and stock it with goldfish varieties that eat mosquito larvae. It is also helpful to grow plants that naturally repel mosquitoes throughout your landscape. Some suggestions include lime basil, catnip and thyme. Change the water in birdbaths regularly and stay on top of pool maintenance…

Oil

A thin coating of oil on top of water suffocates mosquito larvae, killing them quickly. Use natural oils, such as olive oil…

..

or vegetable oil, for this control method. You also can use cinnamon oil. You only need 1 teaspoon of oil per gallon of water. Do not use this method on ponds and other bodies of water that contain fish.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Adding apple cider vinegar to standing water effectively kills mosquito larvae but requires about 18 hours to get the job done. Completely non-toxic, vinegar kills mosquito larvae at a ratio of 15 percent vinegar to 85 percent water. Make sure you use enough vinegar; lower concentrations don’t kill the larvae. Vinegar is environmentally safe, so use more than necessary when in doubt. Vinegar also can be used as a mosquito repellent.

I live in Japan (not that it matters) and my yard is about 5 times the size of a normal person’s yard. every year, lots of mosquitos. . I sprayed once 2 weeks ago and I’m very surprised with the results. even after a few days of good rain, it still seems to be working great. I have only seen a couple of mosquitos. I made some more today but with rain coming the next two days, I will wait and spray later. So far, works freaking awesome!!!! For any of you that is skeptical, what will it hurt for you to give it try? the price of 3 beers and a $1.50 or so for a bottle of mouthwash? C’mon!

This works great. I mix it up every year. I also use just a cheap spray bottle from a Dollar store. I’ve made batches for friends and family and gave it to them to use plus included the recipe. It’s affectionately known as “witches brew” lol! Definitely a good mosquito repellent. Safe to use. I live on a farm and never have a problem with mosquitos.

it works! I spray the bushes in front of my porch and only have to do this every 60-90 days 😉👍 I have a 5 gallon pump sprayer and spray around my flowers and plants does not harm them! But you have to do it when you are not expecting rain! And not do it the day after it rains…aim for a dry day for it to really coat the ground and soil😉👋

In this video I’ll show you how to make a quick, cheap, & easy mosquito trap from things you likely have laying around the house.

Items needed:
1 cup of water
1/4 cup of brown sugar
1 gram of yeast
1 2-liter bottle

HOW:
1. Cut the plastic bottle in half.
2. Mix brown sugar with hot water. Let cool. When cold, pour in the bottom half of the bottle.
3. Add the yeast. No need to mix. It creates carbon dioxide, which attracts mosquitoes.
4. Place the funnel part, upside down, into the other half of the bottle, taping them together if desired.
5. Wrap the bottle with something black, leaving the top uncovered, and place it outside in an area away from your normal gathering area. (Mosquitoes are also drawn to the color black.)

Change the solution every 2 weeks for continuous control.”

Colors That Attract Mosquitoes gardeningchannel.com
“..Mosquitoes are attracted to the heat retained by dark clothing: black, browns, dark blue and the like are especially appealing. Lighter-colored clothing is more likely to reflect heat, so mosquitoes are less likely to notice it. That’s not to say that you’ll go completely unbuzzed, but if you wear white, beige, or yellow, the mosquitoes will nibble on your friends in the darker duds first..”
